Owners of historical homes know that choosing paint colors is a nerve-wracking and critically important decision. Ready-mix paints have been available since the middle part of the nineteenth century and from that time home owners have had to choose their colors without really knowing how their finished home will look. After all, a two inch paint chip looks very different from a 3,000 square foot house!

In a visit to New England in the 1840s, famed novelist Charles Dickens commented, "All the buildings looked as if they had been painted that morning … Every house is the whitest of white; every shutter is the greenest of green."

If you have an older home and want to choose colors other than green and white, here are some guidelines"

1. Light colors "advance" a home while dark colors cause it to "recede". This means that lighter shades will make your home appear larger and closer to the street, while darker shades make your home seem smaller and further away. If you want your house to blend in and be less noticeable, therefore, a darker hue is best.

2. Light dramatically affects how colors appear to the human eye. In cooler climates the light is diffused and bold colors are intensified. In southern climates, the harsher, brighter sunlight will cause pale tints to appear washed out.

3. If you want your gutters and downspouts to be less noticeable, paint them the same color as the house.

4. Make sure any mildew problems are solved before painting. Test suspicious spots with household bleach and if they change color, you definitely have a mildew problem.

5. Moisture problems must be eliminated before painting. If they are not, water will ruin even the best paint job.

6. Some paint manufacturers offer color ‘families’ to simplify choosing. That is, there are several colors that go well together and eliminate the agony of figuring out the exact right shade for the trim so that it will relate well to the primary exterior color.

7. It’s always possible to get expert help. This is especially desirable if you own a historical landmark and wish for it to be restored to its former appearance. Historical paint consultants are familiar with shades available at the time the home was built and can often do research to determine original colors. These folks understand chemical changes in paint and can usually figure out what the original colors looked like before they faded to today’s milder colors.

8. There is software available that allows home owners to scan in a picture of their home and then try out different colors without making an actual commitment. It’s powerful to see your home in Colonial Barn Red or Patriot Federal Blue before actually putting a drop of color on the outside.

9. You might consider staining your historical property, rather than painting it. Stain is cheaper and it won’t peel off or crack the way paint does. This is because it actually sinks into the wood, rather than coating it so it will instead weather and dim over time. Stain won’t cover up any imperfections in the wood the way paint does, however.

Owning and living in a historically significant home is a privilege and maintaining that house is a responsibility to take seriously. Therefore, avoid hasty color choices and take the time to choose wisely.

Dear friends, any interior space is composed of some primary architectural elements such as walls, floor and ceiling. Depending upon the type of structural framework, the construction method would change.

We always see experience and perceive any interior space in elevation. This means that walls are the first things of any structure that create an impact on our mind. The quality and volume formed because of the walls define an architectural structure.

When we enter a building, what we primarily and dominantly perceive are walls. Let’s see how walls can be used as an excellent element in a bedroom design project.

1) Exposed Brick walls.

In order to use these kind of walls it is necessary to preplan the interior design schedule. Normally if a brick wall is to be kept exposed (without plaster), it is built with high quality bricks which are machine cut for high quality and accuracy.

Since bricks have their own color and texture, this option can be used to create a color contrast by keeping only one wall exposed and other with a contrasting color. This can add some interest in the bedroom.

2) Exposed plaster walls.

An exposed plaster wall is a wall which has not been painted.

These kind of walls are very rarely used in interiors. Since the plaster is a composite material using appropriate qualities of cement, sand and aggregate, the final material has a dull color. A dull color on a space like bedroom would express a kind of depression, hence is not recommended.

But portions of a wall with preplanned design and sketching can be used in association with exposed brick wall. Design pattern with partly colored and partly exposed plaster can be a good idea.

Or a completely exposed plaster wall with a design patter in grooves can be used effectively.

3) Wall with tile cladding.

Tile cladding is what we see in kitchen above the cooking platform. Tile cladding is also used in bathrooms and toilets. These are normally ceramic tiles.

In a bedroom interesting patterns can be created to fake the exposed brick wall mentioned above. Many excellent patters can be used just like a jigsaw puzzle.

4) Paintings.

The word painting has two meanings here.

a) A wall with plane colors applied to it. This is done above the plastered surface of the wall. Two or three coats of the desired shade of the color and base material are applied.

b)Secondly, instead of using plane colors, the entire wall can be used as a "canvas" to paint a story or mural. This is a very good method to paint children bedrooms. Walls can be used as a storyboard to create interest.

5) Wallpapers.

Applying a wallpaper is an excellent way to quickly change the look and feel of the bedroom. Depending upon the "theme" of the room many wallpaper patterns are available.

Wallpapers are very good in large bedrooms. In large bedroom "emptiness" is a big problem. If there are not enough decorating elements available, a room might look empty. Here wallpapers can serve as fillers and quickly add some interest in the room.

6)Textured plaster walls.

These kind of walls need special techniques to create a textured pattern on walls. Once a texture is applied any shade of paint can be used.

One of the great thing about these walls is, when sunlight falls on them, a very interesting play of light and shadows gets created. Because of the undulations in the surface of the plaster, small shadows form on the surface of the wall, giving it a visual quality.

A wall in the bedroom which receives direct sunlight should be chosen for this purpose.

This article shows you how various options to the existing wall finishes are possible, that can enhance the quality of the bedroom interior space.

I hope this article was informative to everyone.

Whether you are doing a simple redecorating of your bedroom or a total remodel or addition, one way to keep on schedule is to make sure we complete each task with laser focus and avoid going off on a tangent. Very often we begin a project with a specific goal in mind, only to find ourselves sidetracked. It happens every day in every way. The phone or doorbell rings, one of the kids needs help, or your spouse hollers something unintelligible from the basement. Anything can and often does happen to break our concentration.

Staying focused on the current project of your bedroom remodel will help you to be able to move on to the next phase without having to keep thinking about what you missed in the previous phase. This will help you get the entire project done right and on time. Returning to a previous enterprise in order to tweak or fix something is actually a waste of your time whereas, if you had been focused, you wouldn’t have to "do" it again. Isn’t it amazing how often it is that we have the time to do it again, but often don’t have the time to do it right the first time?

So how do you stay focused on your bedroom design project?

In order to stay focused, one should prepare an outline of exactly what the bedroom design will entail. Whether it be a small redecorating project or a huge “take down the walls” remodel, this is an important step. Preparing a written outline is a surefire way to stay focused on your project. You can prepare different plans for separate projects, with several projects ongoing at the same time. During some projects you may encounter "waiting times", for any number of reasons. Having different project outlines available will ensure that "waiting time" does not necessarily mean "wasted time".

When writing an outline, it’s important to cover each aspect of your project, from start to finish. Always ask and answer the Who, What, Where, When and How questions. This may sound elementary, even redundant, but it works. And no-one can fault what consistently works.

While preparing your outline, ideas about your bedroom will pop into your head. The "what ifs", and "could be’s" will enable you to see a great many possibilities to incorporate into your project. Or not. Whether or not you use those ideas to make your bedroom better will determine the completed product. Those ideas and their quality may or may not be incorporated into the final product, but having those ideas now is certainly better than wishing you had planned for them, when it’s too late. You may need to revisit some aspect of your outline. It’s much easier and less costly to revise the plan, than to revise the project after beginning. An outline will enable you to "see around corners", so to speak. To look ahead and foresee possible problems. It all comes from writing it down. Most of us don’t plan to fail, but very often we fail to plan. Failing to plan is tantamount to planning to fail.

Your outline doesn’t need to be fancy. Depending upon the intricacy of your project, a numbered or bulleted list may serve your purposes. Of course, the more intricate your project, the more intricate your outline will become. You can even incorporate check boxes, so that when those distractions come, as they usually do, you’ll know exactly where you stopped.

Your outline should flow from beginning to end just as if you were actually working on the project. This will help you keep the various phases in perspective. You may need to plan the various phases in detail. These phase plans will become part of your overall plan. For the purposes of building your outline, pretend you’re building a house. The foundation would naturally come first, then the walls, finally the roof. Your outline should follow this "building code". All worthwhile structures follow this example. The fleshing out of your outline would be the same as the landscaping and decorating of your house. Save them for last. In other words, start with the basics: What, When, Where, Why and How, (the foundation). Then move on to the tools, resources and knowledge, (the walls). Next comes the finish (the roof).

The "outline" stage of your project is where you’ll do most of the learning required to reach a successful conclusion of your project. For example: What tools do you need? Where will you find those tools? How much do they cost? What resources can you find to help you? What resources do you have? Where can you go, or who can you see to gain the necessary know-how? These questions and many more need answering before you can expect to be successful in your project. When you ask yourself these questions and get them answered, often you’ll find the project is within your capabilities. When you write down and follow your plan, one step at a time, the project becomes less daunting. The longest journey begins with one step. When you write your outline and re-read it a few times, your memory will be "unlocked" and sometimes you’ll be amazed at what you already knew.

Now you’re ready to go back and flesh out your outline. This is the decorating part if you are planning a huge remodel and where you can get bogged down with the details if you lose sight of the "big picture". Take your time with the details; after all, quality is also part of your project. But put together the details in such a way that they can be changed. This is an outline, not a plan carved in stone. You can make revisions, additions, deletions, substitutions and corrections. It’s easier to make those changes now rather than later.

Another important step is to make sure your project has and end date. If you leave it open ended, you will never finish that great master bedroom! You may find that the bedroom completion date needs to be extended but you must put a stake in the sand at the beginning and have a projected end date. This gives everyone something to work for and creates a sense of urgency.

Depending on the extent of your bedroom project, you can use the outline to generate a formal plan with blueprints and diagrams or just a simple drawing of what you want the room to look like if your project does not involve any building.

Accessories are what turn a bland bedroom into a designer show piece! Accessorizing your bedroom is a very important aspect in the decorating process. When you buy a new outfit it is greatly enhanced with jewelery, scarves and purses for women and ties or watches for men. A bedroom is no different! You can add character and beauty to a home in many ways just by following a few inexpensive changes.

First off, you must decide on a bedroom theme. Is it a victorian, modern, southwest, traditional or safari style that would suit your personality? Look in magazines, books or the internet to get a flavor of the accessories you would like to see in your home. Purchase accessories that go with the theme and color of your bedroom. Color choices should compliment the main color in the room.

Sometimes you might find that you already have all the accessories that you need but you just need to display them differently. It is recommended to group your accessories in odd numbers rather than even numbers. Different heights and textures are also attractive. For example, a night side table can have a lamp, picture frame and small pot of flowers as a grouping.

Hanging prints or pictures in your bedroom is a great way to make boring walls come to life. But most people don’t know how to properly hang wall art. Often times, pictures and artwork are hung too high on the wall giving it an awkward appearance. The rule of thumb is the picture should be hung so that the middle of the picture is at eye level. Art work should be placed no more than five to eight inches above the sofa or seven to ten inches above a table. Try to align pictures in different geometric shapes (vertical, circular, triangular or rectangular groupings) in various sizes for a different effect.

In the bedroom, night tables and bookcases are often found to be too cluttered and full of small knickknacks. Try to vary the size of the shelves vertically for interest. Vary the heights of books with the tallest in the middle. Don’t put small books next to tall books. Take off dust covers from books to show their often rich colors. The upper shelves can be used for candles, family pictures, fancy bowls or larger ornaments in odd number groupings of 1, 3 or 5 pieces. You can also mix and match books with ornaments, but make the books the focal point. Don’t leave a gap between the ceiling and the top of the bookcase. Place a plant on the top shelf for balance.

Lighting is key in the bedroom. You want to be able to set different moods. You might want subtle lighting for those romantic times, then you will also want bright lighting for getting ready to go to work. Accent a large picture with a spot light to enhance a focal point in a room. Lighting creates ambiance and should coordinate with the theme you want to create. Get creative with an old lamp by adding tassels, beads or decorative finials. Use faux paint or wrap funky fabric around the base to give it a new lift.

Area rugs can define a space and pull a bedroom together. Place furniture completely on the rug for a warmer effect. Area rugs used under a dining room table should be large enough to also accommodate the chairs when fully pulled out.

Use many pillows on the bed as this can add a splash of color in a bedroom. Vary the colors and patterns of the pillows and graduate the sizes from large to small. Pillows are also great on a sofa and will add tremendous character to a dull living room.

Mirrors are great to expand a smaller space. Try leaning a tall mirror behind a bed as a head board for a dramatic look! These mirrors can be five to six feet tall. It has an amazing effect!

You can give your master bedroom attached bath a spa appeal by placing clear glass bowls filled with colored soaps, bath salts or bubble bath beads on the bathroom counter. Candles are also nice on a bathtub. Low lighting with lit candles will sooth all your troubles away!

Have fun trying out new things. Shop around for different accessories for your bedroom. Try antique stores, consignment shops or flea markets for ideas. There are many craft books available that you can also explore. First impressions are lasting. Do not mix beautiful furniture with cheap accessories. Accessories can make or break the ambiance of your home. Be creative and trust your instincts!

Blinds can be very utilitarian, even industrial as a window treatment. Among the reasons that they have been popular as window decoration in office and industrial setting is because they are durable, easy to clean, filter sunlight effectively and provide privacy. For all of these same reasons they are also popular as window decorations in homes. The trick was to make them attractive.

Types of windows blinds

Designers and home decorating companies have come up with a wide variety of materials and finishes for blinds. Decorators also use curtains and valences to give windows a much warmer feel. The result has been window treatments that are attractive, bright, airy and contemporary. The types of blinds commonly used in homes today include the following.

1.Venetian. These are still usually made from aluminum; however they may also be plastic. The slats may be 1, 2 or 3 inches wide and are slightly curved. The slats are connected by cords and twill tape. They can be opened, closed, opened at an angle or pulled up to the top of the window. These blinds are very versatile, can be used in any room and are available in many colours. The slats close tightly, providing privacy when desired.

2.Wood slat. Venetian blinds made from wood are also called wood slat blinds. The slats are thicker, and when pulled to the top of the window, will create a thicker stack. They may be stained or painted. Like other styles, the slats can be opened or closed to admit or filter sunlight.

3.Miniblind. These have become very popular in the past 20 years or so. The slats on these blinds are very narrow, either 1/2 or 1 inch wide. They may be aluminum or PVC and come in a wide array of colours. These are a type of Venetian and can be opened, closed or pulled to the top of the window. These are very popular because when closed, they give the window a very smooth appearance.

4.Vertical. Vertical blinds are very popular in both offices and in homes. They may be used for both windows and sliding glass doors where they can be open, closed or pulled to one side. The PVC or metal slats hang from a track across the top of the window or door. The slats may either be connected at the bottom with a chain or cord, or simply hung loose. Some models are electric blinds and can be opened and closed with a remote control unit.

5.Woven. Unlike the styles described above, woven blinds do not have slats that open or close. The slats are very narrow and woven together. Narrow spaces between the slats filter sunlight. More light is admitted by pulling a draw string and rolling the blind up toward the top of the window. Woven blinds do not offer quite as much privacy as Venetians.

Not only do blinds come in a variety of attractive styles, they are also available in a variety of materials. The combination of styles and materials give decorators tremendous versatility in putting together extremely attractive windows. This versatility results in windows that compliment and coordinate well with virtually every taste in room decor. Among the materials used in blinds are the following.

Metal
For years metal, especially aluminum, has been among the most popular materials for blind slats. Metal is durable, easy to clean and long-lasting. It comes in a variety of colours and the slats are available in widths from 1/2 inch to three inches.

Wood
Wood is a popular window dressing material because of the rich beauty and sense of strength it offers. Wood gives a room an aesthetic quality not found with any other material. Wood can be stained or painted a virtually infinite variety of colours. The slats in wooden blinds are generally one to two inches wide. Draw strings are pulled to open or close the slats, thus controlling the amount of light let into the room. Wood is used for both Venetian and woven blinds.

Cane
Cane is used in woven blinds. Cane may be either bamboo or rattan. The slats may be either whole or split pieces of cane. The slats do not open or close, but the small spaces between the pieces of cane admit filtered light into the room.

Vinyl
PVC. Vinyl is used in both Venetian and woven styles. It is easily substituted for metal or wood in Venetian or woven styles. Vinyl looks good for years, is easy to clean and is typically much less expensive than metal or wood.

Fabric
Stiffened fabric is sometimes used as slats. This fabric may also be back with vinyl or metal. Fabric can be used to compliment or coordinate with other fabrics in the room.

Blinds can be used as the sole window treatment or in combination with drapes, curtains and valances. As the sole window treatment, they can make a room look larger and contemporary. Used in combination with curtains and valances, the room can be made to feel softer and smaller. The fabric of curtains or valances softens the hard, linear appearance created by blinds. The possibilities are almost limitless for the home decorator.

The decor in almost every room of the home can include blinds as part or the entire window treatment. A traditional styled living room, for example, looks comfortable and homey with light-coloured Venetians in the windows topped with a scalloped valance. A breakfast nook has a bright and airy feel with woven rattan blinds filtering out the full strength of the morning light. Bedrooms are private and attractive with rich-hued miniblinds softened by floor length double tied back and lined curtains. Small bathrooms seem larger with lightly-coloured Venetians providing privacy while admitting sunlight.

Blinds are colourful, functional and decorative. In combination with curtains and other window dressings they add style and a pleasing linear effect to any room. The blinds of today are a far cry from the sterile and antiseptic windows of my childhood physician’s office.

Your bedroom is your oasis, but lets face it, if you have small children they are bound to spend time in you room. If you want to have a luxurious bedroom but still be kid friendly, you can make use of some of the new materials and products to achieve both.

If you thought that having a family meant putting your decorating skills and ideas on the back burner then you just haven’t been opening your eyes to the stylish ideas designers use to liven up their own homes and their client’s homes, even with children (and pets) around!

Kid Proof Materials

Yes, choosing the right material can make all the difference when furnishing a home for a family.

Have you always loved leather? Well it’s not only great for minor spills that are quickly wiped off, it also wears well, even gaining a beautiful patina with time and use. Leather does not collect pet hair as a cloth couch or chair would, and crumbs and dirt will wipe off easily. Leather furniture works great to create a sitting area in a masculine, contemporary or exotic look bedroom.

If your bedroom is more light and airy you may prefer fabric upholstery in your sitting area. Think of luxurious Ultrasuede. Sophisticated enough for even the most formal rooms, it’s looks belie the easy care of the material. You won’t deal with fading or staining the way you are accustomed to with cotton, and many stains will come off quite easily with a damp cloth.

Do you have real ruffians running around? You can always count on slipcovers if you need to. Many decorators have used white or cream slipcovers to good effect, although you may consider a stripe or other pattern to disguise everyday wear. And because you can clean them thoroughly by removing them you do not have to be too concerned about occasional messes. Slipcovers also work well on fancy dining room chairs and can be removed for adult-only dinner parties.

Your bedding can be easily washable if you purchase the right materials. A print pattern in cotton or other washable fabric will work well to hide stains. On the other hand, try to stay away from delicate materials like silks or velvets which stain easily and are difficult to clean.

Kid Proof Furniture

If you have small children you may also consider choosing soft furnishings, like ottomans, to replace hazards such as hard edged tables. You can even buy upholstered bed frames that are soft on the corners.

Area rugs can be great for keeping light colored carpets in good shape, but be certain they rest flat so children are not prone to trip over them. Selecting heavy rugs or using a special padding underneath to reduce movement would be especially recommended when using rugs on hard, slippery surfaces.

When choosing wood furnishings, light or dark, be sure it has a protective clear coat so that marks and spills do not ruin the finish.

Decorating your bedroom can be a great way to give your self a tranquil retreat, yet so many people neglect this room. Often times people focus on the public rooms of the home – the kitchen, living room and guest bathroom but the bedroom is your own private sanctuary and you owe yourself to decorate it!

If decorating your bedroom seems like an overwhelming task, you might want to take it easy and make small changes over a period of time instead of one huge change. On way to ease yourself into decorating the bedroom is to start with the walls. Artwork can make a huge difference in the look of your bedroom and is one decorating idea that you can easily reverse if the look doesn’t work.

What is the first thing you notice when you walk into someone’s home? The walls, right? Walls enclose the home, giving a thematic impression. So, if your walls are empty you’ve got to get to work to populate them. Wall hangings can be expensive, but that’s only if you purchase something by a famous dead artist. You can create your own artwork without any art instruction whatsoever. First, you have to consider your theme. If you have a Victorian, feminine or shabby chic bedroom theme then you will want floral or feminine artwork. A modern bedroom theme will look best with prints in sleek frames. A tropical look? Then get some jungle style prints or prints of exotic animals and birds.

Do you have hundreds of pictures and just don’t know what to do with them? If the idea of a personalized bedroom picture wall appeals to you, you could arrange the photos into a huge wall photo collage. Examples include pictures of exotic places, weddings, and children growing up. If there is a teenager in your home, their bedroom is probably home to a huge collection of music CDs. They can create their own wall collage using the cover art from their CDs. Although you will have more fun creating your collage yourself, there are companies that will take care of this for you. The cost ranges from about $50 for an 8×10 to $150 for a 20×24 wall collage.

If your bedroom contains foliage, you might want to consider pressing leaves or flowers and framing your work; the best of these are flat. You basically place the leaves or flowers in a book to allow them to dry flat. They are ready for your wall hanging when they become crisp. This shouldn’t take longer than a week or two. After the items are pressed, you will just need to mount the artwork and hang it on your wall.

When you decorate your bedroom with artwork you are only limited by your imagination. Don’t be afraid to experiment. As mentioned previously, artwork is easily reversible. So, be imaginative and creative and design your artwork.

Your bedroom reflects your personality just as much as your perfume does. Transforming your personal space into a romantic haven can be easy and affordable. A few simple changes will lend a sense of quiet comfort to a room that you’ll love to come back to!

I think we work hard and deserve and little space of serene tranquility. Don’t you? Close the door, leave the word outside and treat yourself!

Of course the first place to start is with your linens. No matter what sheets you like, from non iron percale to pure linen, they should be embroidered or trimmed with eyelet or a beautiful laced edging.

* Have a combination of layers on the bed. It is wonderful to be able to “shed a few petals” during the night as you get warmer. Many layers of light materials, from cotton sheets to down comforters (or two very thin down comforters with a cotton sheet in between) make a great combination.

* If you decide to have an all white or ivory color theme in your room, you might want to add some pastel colored accents such as curtains, pillows, lampshades, etc. The colors can be easily changed for a summer and winter look. Macrame lace curtains, with their rich texture will give your windows a most graceful and dramatic look, especially if they fall generously onto the floor.

* If you like to sew, you can create artful pillows with eyelet trimming. You could place one, two or even three rows of white or ivory eyelet on pastel sheets and pillows, or vice versa. Just remember to keep continuity in the color scheme of your room. You could also cover pillows with any lace of your choice.

* Do not forget to pile pillows of different sizes and textures when you bed is made. They could all blend with the color of your bedspread or pick up on the color of your curtains, chairs, or rugs.

* How about a flowing, lacey, to-the-floor canopy bed cover? You can always tie back the canopy with some lovely tassels during the day. Macrame lace is a preferred choice in Europe because of its elegant, but flowing feel.

* Comforters are making a big comeback, and it’s easy to see why! They are light, warm, and give a room a cozy touch. They are traditionally filled with goose down but are now available with hypoallergenic synthetic fillings that are just as comfortable. Paired with freshly laundered linens, they will be ready to cuddle you for a well deserved rest. One word of advice: Do lock your door; kids love to jump on them!

* You could make a beautiful bed cover out of eyelet material, and just lay it flat over your solid colored sheets or comforter. If you need to make it wider, just make sure the seams will be on the edges of the bed. Some eyelet material can even be cut around the stitched design and requires no sewing (my favorite!). You could also cut out a runner for your dresser or night stand. Classic beauty is always in details!

* A sweep of sheer mosquito netting above your bed is all you need to give your room a sunny, tropical getaway feeling. (I’ll throw in the ocean as a bonus!)

* You can easily give your headboard a personal touch. Sew a slipcover (leaving a few inches of fabric on each side to form a flat flange and to add buttonholes and buttons if you’d like) and cover that fabric with lace or eyelet of your choice. You could then slip this cover over an existing headboard or a cut out piece of plywood.

I hope these tips help you, but in the end, your imagination and creativity will make your bedroom unique as you are.
