Home decor is a challenging job for many homeowners. If you don’t have any experience, it can sometimes seem like a tremendous headache. There is no secret to selecting the ideal home decorations. You can do something dramatic like adding new carpet or building a second bathroom, or you can add beautiful little accents all over your home to make it feel rejuvenated.

Choosing the right home decor items can be rough; you should do some research first and look at lots of images to get ideas. Even if you know your style outline, first decide what your resources are. Once you have completed the primary part, you should then decide on the furniture and accessories to use. You might want to go with colors that are easy to match.

You can apply this tip in any room by adding just the right accessory to make a new statement in your home decor. There are lots of great websites that offer unique options that can outline your decision-making. The major mistake people make is buying one piece at a time. It’s important to choose bits and pieces for warmth and comfort, and is resourceful and don’t limit yourself, sky’s the limit!

A Duvet Cover is actually just another name for a Bed Comforter Cover. It’s like a very large pillow case, is is normally used to cover a down comforter. Using a duvet cover makes changing your bedroom decor quick and easy, and it’s much easier to clean than a full comforter.

Duvet covers come in all sizes, however according to review in Good Housekeeping Magazine, sometimes sizes can vary as much as 10 inches. When buying duvet covers, it’s a good idea to look at the size in inches, then compare that to the actual size of your comforter.

Buying a duvet cover is a quick and easy way to change the look of your bedroom decor. They make great focal and starting points when you’re designing the room’s look too. Since you can choose from a wide selection of both fabric styles, solid colors, or patterned prints, you can immediately change the entire look of your bedroom simply by changing your duvet cover.

Like sheets, when you buy a duvet cover you’ll want to pay attention to the fabric type - or fiber composition. For instance: do you want a 100% cotton duvet cover, pure silk duvet cover, or a polyester cotton blend? The thread count is important too, usually the higher this is, the better quality duvet cover you have. And better quality generally means it will last longer, and look new longer too.

Cleaning your duvet cover is usually just as simple as cleaning sheets. You toss them in the washer and dryer as needed. Since the duvet cover resides on top of your bed, washing it each season tends to be frequently enough for most people.

Duvet covers can be easily made too, from a pair of bed sheets actually. If you find a set of sheets you really like, or you love your current sheets so much you’d like to show them off, buy another two top sheets in the same style, then simply sew them together. Leave one end open to slide your comforter into, and put buttons, a zipper, or pretty ribbon ties on that open end.

You see it all the time in retail discount stores: Color coordinated decor for just about anywhere in your home. And some of the designs are quite pretty. In fact, some people become obsessed by them. They’re usually really cute, come in a variety of colors, shades, patterns and designs, and they just plain make decorating easy. There’s no guesswork - everything is matched for you automatically. But there’s also no unique style. No sense of "you" in the finished style. If you mix and match styles up a bit though, you’ll end up creating something that’s just right for you, your home, and your style preferences. Here are a few tips on doing that.

1. It’s ok to start with a "cookie cutter" design style, pattern, or color theme you’ve found in a general store. These are actually great starting places for getting new decor ideas.

2. Try choosing just one or two matching items from the store. For instance, let’s say you plan to decorate your bathroom in a sea green color scheme. You’ll find plenty of really nice shower curtains to fit this color scheme well, so choose one you like. If you just can’t resist… go ahead and get the matching accessories too, such as the toothbrush holder and soap dish.

3. Now most likely the ready made design of your shower curtain has traces of other colors mixed in. It’s common for instance, to see blues, tans, yellows and oranges in a sea green coordinated bathroom set, because these colors tend to be seen when you’re actually at the sea or ocean. So they compliment each other.

And this is a key decorating point: Your room colors don’t have to match exactly. They should simply compliment each other. So in our sea green bathroom decor example above, it would be perfectly natural to add a set of solid tan colored towels, burnt orange wash cloths, and a throw rug with touches of blue in it. If the blue doesn’t seem to fit quite right for your tastes, then try a deep forest green colored rug instead.

4. Try different color shade combinations. If you’re using primarily green in the bathroom design, try both a light and dark shade as previously mentioned. Test the colors out though, because sometimes one shade doesn’t sit well next to another. Sometimes you can tell this instinctively by holding two items of different shades together in the store, but other times you’ll need to actually buy the items and test them in the actual room itself. Anything that doesn’t quite look or feel right in the overall room design can simply be returned to the store.

5. Work with what you have. In our bathroom decor example, the shades of green might not work well if you have pink walls and aren’t able to change them when you’re redecorating. If you have deep, dark wood cabinets and other accessories, the darker green shades might make the room seem a bit too heavy and dark once you have all of the new decorations in place.

6. Don’t be afraid to try mixing decor styles. It’s ok to have a Southwestern style towel set in the same bathroom as a seaside designed shower curtain for instance, because both styles tend to use earth toned colors.

7. Last but not least: If you can’t find decor styles you like at regular stores, try shopping around at yard sales and flea markets. Even if you find just one interesting or unique piece that really catches your attention - that’s a place to start. You can create an entire room’s unique design and decor style by simply working from the color and style of that one piece!

Remember that decorating your home is all about you. Your likes, dislikes, and lifestyle are what’s most important. So be sure to inject a little bit of your own personality into the decor of your home, and your friends and family will be envious of your unique, stylish look!

Bathroom decorating can be done in styles such as country, contemporary, and traditional through colors, fixtures, and fine details. Bathrooms are one of the most used and abused rooms in your home. For many of us, sometimes it’s hard getting started without a little push.

Bathrooms are personal spaces that can look dull and dated. Spark up boring bathroom decorating with some wonderful color either on the walls or in the accessories. Painting is an easy and inexpensive way to make a dramatic and instant impact on a room. There are many painting techniques, but shiny white always looks great. One of the easiest ways to create a professionally designed look in your bathroom is to coordinate the metal finishes. Update the faucet with a new, sleek style in a hot new finish, such as antique nickel; oil rubbed bronze, brushed nickel or stainless steel.

Indirect lighting provided by a lamp on the toilet or vanity instead of a standard overhead fixture to create a soft, serene mood for the space. Replace traditional towel racks with blanket racks. In a nautical-theme bathroom, create a towel rack from an oar or paddle anchored on the wall and fitted with several hooks.

Use practical items as accessories to save both space and money. Towels can be displayed in large baskets, and colorful bottles of shampoos, lotions, bubble bath, etc. look good grouped together. Use scented candles and potpourri to make your bathroom pleasant. Dried flowers work well also. Do it yourself bathroom decorating is easy when you know how.

I believe kids are born creative. Unfortunately living life usually squelches most of that creativity unless it is carefully nurtured. You can help your children maintain their creative nature by allowing them to express it. That’s where interior decorating for kids comes in.

Kids start having color preferences at an early age. Test this out yourself by giving them choices. Rather than purchasing a cute outfit for your child because it’s fashionable or because you like it, pick out two or three and give your child the choice. If you do this often enough with various items and choices, you’ll start to see a pattern emerge. Go with it.

Who spends the most time in the kids’ bedrooms? The kids do of course! So why not make it a room they want to be in? Let your kids have a say in how it’s decorated. Give them choices, and guide them along the way.

One way to start this process, is to determine what your kids’ favorite toy, blanket or TV program is and use it as a basis for your decorating. If it is a theme based item, such as Blues Clues™ or Barbie™, your job will be much easier!

Choose some colors based on these preferences ( colors you can live with as well ), and present them to your child. Have him/her make a first choice.

Now regroup the colors presenting a second selection including colors that will go nicely with the first color choice. Ask your child to make another selection. ( I recommend doing the second color selection on a different day. Kids seem to have a sixth sense, and may well make a bogus choice thinking you have ulterior motives! ) There you have your basis for decorating his room, and your child feels like he got to make the choice, which in fact he did!

After you have two or three colors you’re set, and each of those colors has many shades and tints to work with. You can use these to form the foundation of the bedroom, by painting walls, furniture and selecting bedding.

But wait! There’s more!

Here’s the fun part. If you have a favorite drawing or painting from your child, is there an object in it that could be used as a pattern on the wall? How about a drawing of the sun, the family dog, the house, a hand print or even a silhouette of her head that she did as a school project?

It’s pretty simple these days with all the technology around, to use such a drawing and make a copy, cut out your own stencil and paint or sponge the figures on the walls or furniture. Think how pleased your child will be to see his artwork all around the room.

If you feel artistically impaired, you could give your child a choice of 3 or 4 different Wallies™ Cutouts. These are wallpaper cutouts that are prepasted, and easily applied to the walls and furniture. Your child can help you with this too!

Continue going through the decorating steps in this manner, each time giving your child a choice from 2-4 selections. If you are going to buy a lamp, pick out 2 or 3 that you would consider using in the room, and let your child make the choice. Use the same technique with an area rug, furniture, wall décor and window treatments.

If you take it step by step, letting your kids have the final choice from each of your selections, you are letting them express their creativity and this will in turn give them a sense of ownership.

Think how empowered your kids will feel knowing that they got to choose how to decorate their own rooms! When their friends come over and tell them how cool their room is, they’ll be able to say I got to pick it all out myself!

Imagine the desired total look of the room. Do you want a room that’s organized or a room rich with colors or texture? If you start with a totally empty room, choose an area rug, then paint or wallpaper the walls in colors to match it.

Keep in mind the area rug has to fit the room. Think how the room is used, how much traffic the area gets and who will view it under what light. For high traffic areas such as hallways and foyers, you may want a tough, decorative rug.

If you start with furniture, choose an area rug to pick up the colors used in your furnishing pattern. The fundamentals of a rug design can be more included into the overall design.

Size up the dimension of the room and the area you want to cover up. The most common area rug sizes are 4×6 and 6×9feet. They work well under small tables.

An 8×11 foot area rug or bigger can cover an entire room. Smaller area like in front of a kitchen sink adds color and warmth. A rug with a courageous, overall design can be the focal point of a room with furniture’s in solid or passive patterns.

Light colored area rugs make a room look more open. Choose a rug that will execute well, with the right grouping of thickness and fiber. The denser the mound, the better your area rug will be.

Synthetic yarns, nylon, polyester, acrylic, and polypropylene, and the naturals wool and cotton, are durable, soft, and easy to clean. Your area rug should not only look great, it should perform well, too.

A dining room can be such a fantastic place to entertain, but it can easily be underused if you often eat in the kitchen or in front of the telly instead. Here are a few hints to make it a more special place to spend time…

1) Adding a table cloth and a vase (a pint glass or milkbottle will do for that ‘shabby chic’ look that is very in at the moment) full of flowers (pick wild ones from your garden/balcony or pick a small bunch of something simple like freesias and gypsophila at your local florist/supermarket) adds instant homely atmosphere to a dining room.

2) Light some candles and turn down the lights to add mood. This doesn’t have to be romantic (although it certainly is!) – it is equally relaxing and a lovely way to end a stressful day at work.

3) Create instant new chairs by covering your existing ones with a pretty disguise. All you need is a couple of old sheets and some ribbon. I would recommend batch-dyeing sheets with Dylon Machine Dye (really easy, just follow the instructions on the packet) to a colour that coordinates with your curtains and carpet, then cutting each sheet in half. Your local haberdashers/John Lewis will stock ribbon – I’d choose quite wide ribbon in a similar colour, or another colour in your scheme, eg brown ribbon on cream sheets, or gold ribbon on burgundy sheets for a lovely warm look. You’ll need about 1 – 1 ½ metres per chair, depending on the width of the back of the chair. Drape the half-sheet over the chair lengthways, so that the seat and the back are covered, and tie the ribbon around the back of the chair above the seat, so that the fabric on the back of the chair is taut and secure. Tie a knot or a bow at the back, and, hey presto, ‘new’ dining room chairs!

4) Antique tablecloths and dresses can be cut up to make colourful napkins – simply cut into squares and hem or overlock the edges to make unique napkins you’ll never see anywhere else.

Start making supper time a special time that you spend together as a couple or family – a place where you have the chance to talk and share the day’s successes and disappointments without the distractions of the television, or even the washing-up (at least not until afterwards!). Enjoy!
