When it comes to home decorating, it’s difficult to know where to begin. Like an artist with a blank canvas, you look at the room you’ve chosen to decorate and try to envision the finished masterpiece. However, with a plethora of home decorating styles from which to choose, that vision can be fuzzy. You may even feel overwhelmed by the possibilities and paralyzed by the thought that you’ll make choices you won’t be able to live with. When that’s the case, it’s time to go back to the drawing board.

The first step in home decorating is to define your personal taste and style. Invest your time in looking through magazines and cutting out pictures of home decorating styles, furniture, and accessories that appeal to you. Once you have a collection of several dozen pictures, lay them out in front of you. You’ll begin to notice a pattern of the style that appeals to you. Are you attracted to the dark wood of antique furniture, or to the minimalist lines of modern furniture? Do you imagine yourself surrounded by the muted colors and furniture that remind you of a beach house, or by rich colors and the ornate elegance of the Victorian era?

Once you’ve defined your personal taste and home decorating style, choose a room in your home to redecorate. Although you may want to tackle every room in your house, choosing only one will keep you from becoming overwhelmed.

Once you’ve selected a room, it’s time to choose the one item upon which you’ll build the remainder of the design. This may be a single piece of furniture that already own and love, an antique reproduction that you treasure, or something as simple as a handcrafted piece that you purchased while on vacation. The item you choose may not be the centerpiece of the finished room, but it will serve as your inspiration for the room’s décor.

Next, you’ll need to select the wall color. Since it’s next to impossible to have a sense of what the entire room will look like from a paint chip, buy a quart of paint in the color you like. Then, cut several pieces of cardboard into 18-inch squares, paint the cardboard, and hang one on each wall. Live with those paint swatches for a few days, noticing how the feel of the room changes with morning light, afternoon light, and artificial lighting. Once you’ve decided that’s a color you love, you should go ahead and paint the room. Remember that there are a variety of texturing and patterning techniques you can use to bring more vibrancy and life to the color of the paint.

When selecting furniture for your room, keep your inspirational piece in mind. An antique reproduction of a Chippendale chair may be the perfect accompaniment to your treasured area rug, but an antique reproduction of a French armoire won’t fit if your room is inspired by a 1950s Havana cigar box. Likewise, you should select furniture that fits your lifestyle. A white sofa isn’t a good solution if your dark-haired pooches will be sleeping on it.

Home decorating is both fun and rewarding. Best of all, your finished room will be a reflection of your personality and lifestyle - and will make coming home a sweet experience.

With the weather cooling, it’s time to put on the fireplace. Curling up near a cozy fire is a wonderful winter pastime but you’ll need the right tools to tend your fire. Vintage fireplace accessories can add just the right atmosphere to your décor. Here’s what you’ll need to keep your fire aglow.

Fireplace Tool Sets.

In the 18th and early 19th centuries when a fire was the only source of heating a home, a large fireplace was essential. You may notice that vintage fireplace tool sets can be larger in scale than modern sets. The reason is simple - larger fires required large tools to maintain it. Tool sets for the fire – a shovel, poker, brush and pair of tongs were usually made of brass, bronze or wrought iron. Bronze tools are more valuable than brass or wrought iron. Look for fireplace tool sets to match the décor of your home. Ornate Victorian tools suit more traditional homes. More modern decor lends itself to the simple linear tools reminiscent of the Arts and Crafts period.

Andirons or Fire-dogs.

Andirons are iron supports used to rest burning logs in the fireplace. They were utilitarian and not particularly decorative. However, in the 18th century the French fancied up their andirons with ornate figures such as dogs, lions, fish, mythological creatures or people. These were dubbed fire-dogs. Today, the terms andirons and firedogs are used interchangeably. Now, we hold the burning logs in cast-iron grates. You’ll still see andirons in antique shops. Use them to add a striking panache to your hearth.

Fenders.

A fender is three-sided rectangular shaped metal piece that keeps sparks from jumping onto carpets and flooring. They could be very ornamental at times.

Decorative Screens.

There were several styles and purposes for screens – to combat draughts or shield from heat. Some were used to hide the fireplace in summer months. These were called cheval screens. They could be decorative and were made from mahogany, rosewood or satinwood with needlepoint, tapestry or embroidery details. Some were made with unwanted fabric or leather. A pole screen was used when the fire was lit. It was small, light and portable with an adjustable panel that could be square, oval or shield-shaped. It was used to protect the face when you were near the fire – either sitting to be warmed or stoking the fire. Pole and cheval screens are hard to find these days because as central heating became available, screens were often discarded. If you do a cheval screen, you can still use it to hide the fireplace during the warmer months. Mesh screens came along later and served the same purpose as fenders. They held the popping embers in. Look for older mesh screens. They’ll have two small rectangular notches at the base that were to allow for the andirons.

Value.

A matching set consisting of a fireplace tool set, fender and andirons is more valuable than a mismatched set. It’s hard to find a complete fireplace set because over the years the sets were often broken up. If you have one, hang on to it.

Good News.

There are lots of vintage fireplace tools out there. Since they were made of brass, bronze or wrought iron, many have survived over the years. You’ll often find vintage fireplace tool sets more affordable than new sets. Plus, vintage sets will have that great patina that newer sets cannot duplicate.

Contemporary bedroom trends today combine all sorts of stylistic elements to create a look that is unique. Contemporary home décor combines the traditional with the modern, and local trends with global influences.

While contemporary design, despite its influences, remains cool, sleek, and uncluttered, this doesn’t mean that your bedroom will end up creating a cold atmosphere. Here are three hints on how to create a sleek, simple, and contemporary bedroom design with the added warmth fit for a bedroom.

Hint No. 1
First of all, choose a neutral color scheme for your walls, floors and furniture. Neutral colors are the best choices for contemporary design. Neutral colors in the bedroom produce a fresh and clean look. They also make the perfect backdrop for a favorite modern painting, which can add a splash of color. Keep in mind that contemporary bedroom trends use color only to accessorize and never as the basic design statement.

Hint No. 2
In the bedroom, it is always the bed that is the central furniture piece. This is the piece that should be carefully designed and decorated. A contemporary bedroom will demand a bold looking bed. Choose a layered look by adding black and white, or black and red sheets. If you choose a pattern, then again it should be bold, such as rich red rose duvet cover.

In a contemporary bedroom with neutral walls, bold red on a bed will add warmth and atmosphere to your bedroom. It will also brighten the room, and make it more inviting, just what you want a bedroom to be.

Hint No. 3
Keep everything else to a minimum. Simple nightstands, subtle recessed reading lights, full-length mirrors, a pair of wooden, bamboo or chrome stools, on which you may place cushions matching the duvet cover.

Contemporary bedroom furniture trends seek out the best in modern sleek style, but add a touch of warmth and comfort.

Dale Tiffany Inc. has set out to bring the “Touch of Tiffany” back into the world. The mere mention of the word Tiffany will immediately call to mind an idea of quality and unsurpassed excellence. A master craftsman with a world renown reputation for producing one-of-a-kind masterpieces, Louis Comfort Tiffany set a benchmark for the rest of the world to follow. At the end, however, his company went bankrupt and he died with some of his greatest works being tossed into attics and trash bins. His work had been so popular and in such demand that it had become common and out of fashion. But, when some of his pieces began commanding six-figure sums at auction with a perpetually diminishing supply, the world once again took notice of the artist and his great works. By that point, however, hardly any could afford the “Touch of Tiffany”.

Dale Tiffany Background

In 1979, Dale Tiffany embarked on an ambitious mission to produce high quality replicas and make the “Touch of Tiffany” affordable to the average person by reproducing original Louis Tiffany designs and styles. Dale Tiffany quickly became the only company in the world to standardize stained glass production. With the revolutionary new process and by using only the best hand-rolled glass, world-class reproductions became affordable. Dale Tiffany still employs the copper foil technique, originally developed by Louis Comport Tiffany over a century ago, to create one-of-a-kind works of art that are sought out by buyers the world over.

Adhering to the design principles of masters such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Philip J. Handel, and of course Louis himself, Dale Tiffany is able to recapture the essence that made the Tiffany name infamous. Dale Tiffany is also able to create pieces that reflect contemporary design schemes and bring the trademark name into the 21st century. The same fanatical insistence upon excellence is employed by Dale Tiffany whether they are making a high-end replica or an affordable table or floor lamp.

Inspired by the Tiffany products being appraised on a popular television show named The Antiques RoadshowTM, Dale Tiffany began making replicas of actual pieces depicted while filming. They are now known simply as The Antiques RoadshowTM Collection and all replicas are designed by the award winning Sergio Orozco. The collection has been a big hit with customers and continues to help set Dale Tiffany apart from the competition. Other famous collections offered by Dale Tiffany include the Sculpture, Museum, Traditional, Home, and of course the Tiffany.

The range of products available from the Dale Tiffany company continues to grow with each year. Just a few of the products they offer are: wall sconces, accents, chandeliers, ceiling fixtures, stained glass windows, pendants, and a full range of table, desk and floor lamps. Of course their entire selection of lighting is available in a dizzying array of styles including Art Deco, Classical/Traditional, Arts & Crafts, Mission, Victorian, and Modern.

Yes, the “Touch of Tiffany” is once again available with the same emphasis on quality. The only difference now is that Dale Tiffany has brought this fabled touch to the public at prices most can afford but still offering people the opportunity to acquire one-of-a-kind pieces at discount prices.

As the saying goes, what’s old is new again. That’s never truer than when it comes to home decorating. Buddhist art in general - and Foo Dogs in particular - has become increasingly popular with professional and amateur decorators alike. Many people were first exposed to Buddhist art when feng shui - the Chinese art and science of arranging space in harmony with the environment - first became popular. Although feng shui has is roots in Taoism, the Chinese incorporated Buddhist art, such as Foo Dogs, into the design of their buildings from the second century B.C.

Foo Dogs, sometimes known as guardian lions, are generally placed on either side of a building’s entrance. According to Buddhist tradition, Foo Dogs are the guardians of Dharma, or the Truth. Typically displayed in pairs, the male lion has his paw on a representation of the Earth, and the female has her paw on her cub. Male Foo Dogs protect the actual building, while female Foo Dogs protect those inside the building. Historically, they were placed at the gates of temples, at the entrances to tombs, and at the front of altars. Today, replicas of Foo Dogs are often used outdoors as decorative elements at the bottoms of driveways or indoors near the front doors.

Foo Dogs are not the only forms of Buddhist art that are popular with decorators and collectors. A bronze Buddha or a laughing Buddha is often displayed in living rooms, studies, and master bedrooms. The peacefulness and tranquility that a bronze Buddha or a laughing Buddha radiates is a welcome respite after a stressful commute or a long day at the office.

Buddhist art isn’t the only form of ancient art that has increased in popularity. Both Egyptian art and Greek art have enjoyed a resurgence of interest. For example, plaques depicting Isis or Anubis adorn many modern walls. In ancient Egypt, Isis was worshipped as one who protected her son from danger and who would protect mortal children as well. Anubis, typically depicted as having the head of a jackal, is known as the God of the Dead.

As with Egyptian art, many people are choosing to decorate their homes with replicas of Greek art pieces. Vases, wall sculptures, busts, and friezes are all being used as decorating elements in today’s homes. Many women feel empowered when they see sculptures of ancient Goddesses, and are giving such sculptures places of honor in their homes.

As testaments to their faith, Christians are embracing the concept of incorporating Christian art into their homes. Christian art may take the form of depictions of The Last Supper or The Ten Commandments, or may even include statues of angels and saints.

From the office cubicle to the executive penthouse suite and from apartments to mansions, people are trying to carve out spaces to call their own. Outside, the world may be a stressful place but inside these spaces, people strive to create positive environments where they can live and work happily and peacefully. It may seem like a fairy tale to some. However, for others, it is a way to survive many of the negative effects of stressful living.

In the book, Future Shock, Alvin Toffler prophesized that the speed at which technology would develop and be introduced would in the end overwhelm many people. He foretold a future where human’s inability to keep up would cause stress and depression. Here we are over twenty years later and his words have come to pass. Even greeting card companies study the trends and in Karen Moore’s book, You Can Write Creating Cards she cites these trends forecasted by lifestyle trend researchers that people would:

-make their homes more comfortable places in order to avoid the outside world.

-buy affordable little luxuries for themselves or for their homes.

-seek broader awareness of spiritual things.

-desire to be seen as unique and special.

-feel somewhat overwhelmed by responsibilities.

-like alternative medicines and holistic health.

-question belief systems of previous generations.

-be genuinely interested in caring for the environment.

So, how would one describe a positive place? Appealing? Attractive? Humans are complex beings, even if they cannot keep up with nanotechnology and super computers. For an environment to feel positive or attractive, it needs to be appealing to the senses, particularly - sight, sound, smell, or touch. The more senses that are stimulated simultaneously, the more appealing, attractive, and positive the situation is perceived. Any thing that detracts from that perception is usually judged as negative, instead.

Although some architects, space planners, interior designers, and Feng Shui consultants have been addressing the issue of creating positive environments over the past years, most of the general public is just beginning to investigate the possibilities. Ways to turn up the ‘positivity’ of a space, that appeal to one or more senses at time, might include:

-a fountain made of various materials.(sight-sound-touch)

-a contemporary, mixed media painting or sculpture.

(sight-touch-smell, if oil paints are used)

-chimes or bells.(sight, sound, touch)

-incense, potpourri, and aromatherapy.(smell, sight,touch)

-Instruments.(sight-touch-sound)

-Plants and flowers. (sight, touch, smell)

Situations perceived by the brain as positive gives people a sense of well-being and happiness. When in this state, sometimes called euphoria, the domino effect occurs.

-People become open to more positive stimuli.

-Concentration and performance improves.

-Self-confidence and self-assurance soars.

-Creativity blossoms.

-Handling stress becomes easier.

In today’s environment, more and more people will be searching for ways to reduce stress. By creating positive environments, they will be able to do that no matter where they live or work. In doing so, how they live and work will be better, too.

The modern sofa has two things in mind: the ultimate in style, and the ultimate in comfort. Gone are the rock-hard sofas of yesteryear: good looking, but torture to sit on. Today, modern sofa trends present a new and evolved sofa. A sofa design that seeks the best in terms of upholstery material, color, and design, but is also so comfortable to sit on, it doubles as a bed!

Modern sofa trends today produce sofas that are bulky and comfy. The color range is essentially neutral. Neutral colors are the essence of a modern home, which aims to be simple, sleek, and stylish. Bold and bright color is introduced with throw cushions. Never commit yourself to a particular sofa color, unless you can afford to have your sofa upholstered or replaced every couple of years. Color in home design is fickle. If you want to sustain a contemporary look, you’d be better off choosing a neutral color sofa in cream, taupe, coffee, camel, white or black.

In choosing your modern sofa, remember that modern day design is about global influences and the mixing and matching of fabrics. You may like to consider a sofa that combines a leather and fabric upholstery design. If you choose all leather or all fabric then you can be as creative as you like with color accessories. Choose throw cushions and throw rugs to match your window dressing. Add fresh flowers your coffee table to match the color of your cushions.

Do keep in mind that contemporary trends keep changing, and while changes are not dramatic, it is always best to start with a neutral piece of furniture and accessorize according to your mood and global trends. Contemporary sofa trends today tell us to choose a neutral and comfortable sofa and splash it with color.

There is something to be said about a space that has been lovingly designed down to the very last detail. Oftentimes, it is the small details, not the large pieces of furnishings, which truly tie a room together and make it work.

Take for instance bar and counter stools. Sure, bar stools may seem insignificant when it comes to furnishing your kitchen and dining areas, but they can really make a difference in your space. By selecting the right bar stools or counter stools for your area, you can tie together all of the different design elements in your kitchen and dining areas and really make them complement each other and work together.

And there is such a large variety of bar stools to choose from that you can incorporate the use of counter and bar stools into any décor no matter if it is contemporary, formal or country. You can choose barstools from popular styles such as Provence, Bordeaux and Manchester, just to name a few. And you can also choose from many different materials including wood, wrought iron, textured fabrics and leather to make your space truly unique.

Take for instance the Hills of Provence Collection bar stool by Powell. This exquisitely carved barstool reflects the enchanting richness of Mediterranean French Country living. With its hand carved crest rail, carved scalloped apron rails in a rich antique white finish with sand-through highlights; it’s a great complement to any living space. The bar stool is upholstered with a Lattice Fabric.

If your space is a bit more formal than country, perhaps the classic, elegant, and majestic, the Fleur De Lis Swivel counter stool is just what you have been looking for. This swivel counter stool has a warm cherry finish with golden highlights and black leather seat and is the perfect compliment to any luxuriously decorated space.

If you prefer sleek, modern lines in your living space, the Bristol Vinyl Swivel bar stool may be perfect for your space. This bar stool features a chrome finish with a vinyl seat that is available in blue, red and black. This comfortable stool offers a clean and elegant modern look for any home.

Those who are romantic at heart often enjoy the draping rope accents, gracefully curved legs, intricate castings, and the fabulous golden bronze finish of the Canterbury Swivel counter stool. With an inspiring combination of beautifully finished metal and easy to maintain faux buckskin leather, this stool is a stunning and romantic addition to any home.

And you do not have to spend a fortune to add that finishing touch to your space with bar stools or counter stools. Beautiful and stylish counter and bar stools can be purchased for as low as $100 each. Of course, you can spend a great deal more than that if your tastes and wallet lead you in that direction.

But in the end it does not really matter how much you choose to spend, you will love the added touch that the addition of bar stools and counter stools brings to your space.

Have you ever walked into a room and noticed how much you liked it? Was it warm, rich and inviting? Or was it cold, dreary and drab?

If your home leaves you with that drab feeling, or doesn’t feel quite right; I have good news for you! You can change it to fit your style and be the home of your dreams!

Decorating a room can make ALL the difference!

Okay, you’ve made a decision. It’s time for that “room-lift!” You’ve decided to take the plunge and decorate!

Congratulations! Now, where do you begin?

It all started for me when I woke up one day and noticed that I did not like my living room. After all, we had inherited the décor and style of the previous owner. I was so busy bearing children and trying to assimilate as a new mother and new homeowner, that I hadn’t even noticed that I did not care for the décor of my home. After all, let’s face it; it did not reflect ME.

A friend of mine had a natural talent for decorating, and as a matter of fact had attended some workshops –and recommended that I just start looking at magazines to get ideas of what I DID like.

Okay, I thought, I can certainly handle that. After all, pouring through and daydreaming about the exquisite dining rooms and living rooms in each new Ethan Allen magazine I received had become an ardent pastime of mine. I LOVED looking at magazines with the gorgeous displays of furniture in different motifs and colors. And when I saw what I liked, I knew it. The style that I loved surfaced quickly, clearly, and easily. With every magazine I looked at, the same style surfaced as my absolute favorite. I LOVED it.

The colors I liked were rich, the style was elegant. I loved the deep jewel tones and the Victorian richness. The shiny gold brass I used to favor as a teenager had now been replaced with antique gold and dark bronze. I loved the deep burgundies, greens, golds, and plums highlighted with accents of pure white.

My friend came over to assess my living room. I had my father-in-law’s brown love seat, a crème-colored paisley print sofa given to me by my own father, a luxurious gold Victorian mirror that I did like (because I bought it) clashing stubbornly with the white country lace curtains leftover from the previous owner. My walls were sterile white. We had a lot to work with!

To bring warmth to the room, we decided to paint the walls. We chose a soft gold for the walls, with one accent wall in cranberry.

I selected various wall hangings, a shelf, and sconces with candles to dress up my walls. I covered my mismatched sofas with slipcovers. I replaced the country lace curtains with a sheer gold window scarf that dipped gracefully down at the top of each window, and then hung down to the floor on each side. I threw an area run down on the living room floor, and centered my new coffee table on top of it. Additional living room accents included a striking European vase embracing a blossom of pure white roses, a floor lamp, and a couple of lush, green topiaries.

The room was beautiful. Our colors were cranberry and gold. All the wall décor contrasted with the color behind it – light colored décor on the cranberry accent wall, and dark décor on the gold wall. The slipcovers and area rug were breathtaking – all in cranberry and gold with a rich Victorian style. I was in love with my living room!

Decorating is fun and easy!

Well, are you ready to take the plunge? Here are some simple steps to follow:

1. Know your style – study magazines until you know what you like. You will be attracted to the same style over and over again, and your style will quickly become evident to you.

2. Decide on what “feel” you want for the room - do you want a dramatic, sophisticated look? A casual look? A modern look? Stick to those styles as you make your choices.

3. Copy the pros - study those magazine photos! What makes the room so quaint; so charming; so luxuriously beautiful? Copy the flower arrangements you see; how window coverings are hung; how wall hangings are “framed” on either side with candles, plants, or figurines, etc.

Have fun and enjoy the process, and you’ll be amazed at the transformation that takes place. Enjoy!

Do you love to entertain in your home? Do you want to treat your guests to a truly sophisticated and luxurious experience each time they attend one of your gatherings? If so, perhaps you should consider incorporating the use of a bar or wine cabinet into your home’s décor.

Far from being just ornamental furnishings, bar and wine cabinets are very practical when it comes to entertaining a large group of friends. No more would you have to serve drinks from a counter top or have to weave your way in and out of guests to get more glasses out of the kitchen cupboards. With bar and wine cabinets, everything is conveniently and beautifully organized right at your fingertips.

And bar wine and cabinets add a sense of sophistication and style that cannot be accomplished by other types of furnishings. Whether your home’s décor is formal, country or modern, there is a wine or bar cabinet that will perfectly complement your individual space, personality and sense of style.

Take for instance the Bealle Steet Oval bar and wine cabinet by Powell. This wine cabinet is breathtaking and is vintage-inspired with sophisticated, tropical Dutch West Indies detailing framed in woven rattan with faux leather accents crafted in select hardwoods covered a lightly distressed two tone "Bahama" finish. This luxurious wine cabinet features includes storage for 12 bottles, 2 drawers, 2 doors, 2 adjustable shelves and 4 unique rattan galleried storage shelves on either end.

If you want a lot of style from a bar cabinet but do not have a great deal of space to devote to one, perhaps the Mardi Gras bar and wine cabinet would be perfect for our space. This beverage cabinet is both elegant and functional and features beautiful hand painting over Black Analine finish. The top flips open and slides to a center position for twice the serving surface. Doors with Antique Pewter handles open to reveal enough storage space for up to 22 bottles and 14 glasses. This bar and wine cabinet also features drawers for added storage and keeps everything snugly nestled inside when not in use.

If you prefer something a little more casual, maybe you would enjoy the multi-functional Casual Bar Cabinet with Marble Top. This cabinet doubles as a kitchen cart and features a medium distressed oak finish with a green marble surface, two towel racks, a center drawer, a 4-bottle wine rack and two shelves for accessories or cookbooks.

And it does not take a great deal of money to upgrade your entertaining space with a bar or wine cabinet. You can take your space from ordinary to extraordinary for under $1000. Some bar cabinets can even be purchased for just a few hundred dollars depending on your tastes, needs and wants.

As you can see from these few examples, there is a large variety of wine and bar cabinets to choose from. So if you are looking to add that special something to your entertaining space, perhaps you should browse the large selection of wine and bar cabinets. You are bound to find something that is just perfect for you and something that will make your next gathering a phenomenal success.

Jennifer Akre is a successful business owner of numerous furniture websites such as http://www.GourmetDecorStore.com. Her websites offer product and information about wine cabinets, bar cabinets and other decor and furniture for your home or garden.
