It’s that time of the year again, when we resolve to make changes that will improve our lives. Your home is a big part of your life and a comfortable, inviting space can really make a difference in how you feel every day. It seems only fitting that we should add some design resolutions to our yearly ritual.

So here’s my top 10 take on the design resolutions that I believe can make a real difference in your home.

1. Designate a space for clutter and resolve to keep it cluttered. Surprised? While it’s true most people would put getting rid of clutter at the top of their lists, I’ve been in enough homes to understand that if clutter is part of your lifestyle, it will just keep coming back. I do, however, believe that it’s possible to control the impact of clutter in your home - and it’s simple. Choose a spot that’s not visible from the public areas of your home and designate a surface, chest or cabinet of some sort for the paper and other things that usually end up in piles all over your home. Give yourself permission to toss anything you don’t want to deal with immediately into your clutter area without even thinking about organizing, filing or putting it away later.

Trust me, if you have no area for clutter you will spontaneously make one, and another, and another. If you have a designated area, it will contain the clutter and keep you from feeling overwhelmed by it. You’ll have a much easier time with everything in one spot when you do decide to sort it all out and, in the interim, at least you will know where to find everything you can’t find.

2. Try at least one new color in your home to break your "color habits". Be bold, do something unexpected or something you’ve always wanted to try. If you are really hesitant, put the color inside a closet door - somewhere where you can see and react to it. The room which makes me smile in my home is one in which the painter made a mistake and used a color that I never would have chosen for myself. As I was awaiting his return visit for a repainting, I discovered that every time I walked into the room it made me smile. The room has been repainted a few times over the years, but always with what I call "my happy mistake."

3. Pick the room or area in your home in which you find it hard to relax and do three things to make the room quieter. For example, think about replacing high contrast colors with a monochromatic scheme or toning down the color with a more muted version. Try simplifying the lines in the room and paring down accessories. Get those bookcases in shape, with all books flush to the front of the shelves in size order, and create some empty wall and tabletop space where the eye can rest.

4. Conversely, pick one room or area in your home that feels bland and the most uninteresting and do three things to elevate the tempo and energize the room. Try introducing higher contrast or bolder colors. Layer in accessories, some interesting coordinated fabrics in the form of throws and pillows, and some new textures. Replace large artwork with a grouping that will add motion to the room.

5. Make at least four changes in your home to freshen it up for the spring and summer. Change or reduce the number of layers in your window treatment to let more of the outside in. Do what your grandmother did - use lighter slipcovers on upholstery and seasonal accessories such as bowls of fresh summer fruit and vases of fresh flowers. Pick up those heavy rugs. Now is the time to send them out for cleaning. Replace them with light floor cloths or leave the floors bare for a cooling sensation underfoot.

6. Rethink the least used room or area in your home. It may be great to look at, but if it isn’t serving any function, you can do better. s its formality no longer appropriate for your lifestyle? Are your college-aged kids really going to miss the playroom? Should you have retired that home office when you retired?

7. Walk through your home room by room and consciously gauge its impact on your senses by isolating various aspects of the experience. What do you see, hear, smell? What can you touch? How does it make you feel? Make adjustments in each room as needed so that the experience is always pleasant and inviting, and appropriate for the room and its function.

8. Create a space just for you. It can be as simple as a chair in which you can escape with a good book or an entire room. Surround your space in your favorite colors and textures. Make it a place you can use for your most relaxing activities and the best spot you can imagine for just sitting and doing nothing at all. Sit in you personal space at least 10 minutes every day.

9. Approach the design and decoration of your home with joy. Whether it’s a little change or a major renovation, try to focus, not on the chores involved, but on the vision you have and the progress you are making toward it. Appreciate the changes, and appreciate yourself for making them.

10. Invite guests a least once a month. When we tidy up for guests, we reawaken our consciousness of all the little things that we can do to make our home inviting and comfortable, details that often get lost in the chaos of our daily lives. Your guests will feel it, but more importantly, so will you.

Today’s scales do more than read a person’s body weight. They can measure the amount of fat on one’s body. There are specific body fat scales that do just that, and they’re becoming a growing trend in the fitness and weight management industries.

Body fat scales send a low, safe electrical current through the body to measure its composition. The electrical current passes more easily through lean muscle than it does through fat. Body composition is calculated mathematically, based upon the speed at which the signal passes through the body. This is how a body fat reading is determined. Body fat scales use a technique called Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis… or BIA for short. Like all body fat tests out there, these scales do not actually measure your body fat percentage. They determine your body density. The examiner (or the scales) then uses a formula to calculate body fat percentage based on body density. These formulas only predict your body fat. Unfortunately there is no one formula that accurately predicts body fat for the whole population. Differences in age, gender, ethnicity, body size, and fitness level all have a significant affect on the results, and are important factors that make body fat indexes differ.

Tanita makes a popular array of body fat scales. The TBF-511 and TBF-515 models use the same revolutionary method of measuring bio electrical impedance analysis (BIA) that give a fast, less intrusive, safe, and accurate way of measuring a person’s body fat. It’s as simple to use a body fat scale as it is to step on a traditional scale. Just step on; these scales give an accurate reading of both weight and body fat within 30 seconds.

Body fat scales also come with a wide array of extra features. Some include memory for up to 4 users, and others have a ""guest mode"" available for irregular users. Some can measure bone mass, body fat percentage and total body water weight. According to some scale manufacturers, fat readings can vary, depending on whether you’ve just exercised, eaten, or even showered.

In this first of a multi part series we’re going to discuss the history of the chair. Yes, they do have a history and didn’t just pop out of nowhere.

Chairs are the ultimate in antiquity. And for many thousands of years chairs were not simply a device for people to sit on while eating or reading. Chairs were an article of state and dignity, used by only the wealthiest and most powerful and not simply an article of ordinary use. Not everyone had chairs. Certainly not like some of the greatest chairs to have ever adorned our world.

Even today, the chair is still used as an emblem of authority in many government buildings all over the world and also at public meetings. Actually, it wasn’t until the 16th century that chairs became common place. Until the chair did become common most people sat on chests, benches and stools. The number of chairs that have survived from early days are very few. That is why they are such an antiquity and worth a lot of money in any kind of condition.

The knowledge that we have of antique chairs is gotten mostly from monuments, sculpture and paintings. There are a few examples of antique chairs that exist in The British Museum, the Egyptian Museum and a few other places around the world.

In ancient Egypt chairs appear to have played a significant role in the lives of the powerful rulers and were of great richness and splendor. Most chairs of ancient Egypt were made of ebony and ivory or of gilded wood. They were covered with very costly materials, sometimes even gems, and supported on legs that were made into the shapes of the strongest beasts of the time, mostly lions. Some legs were even made into the shape of human figures of their captives. From the few paintings we have to go by, these were truly amazing spectacles. The early monuments of Nineveh show a chair without a back but with beautifully carved legs shaped into lions’ claws or bulls’ hoofs. Other chairs are supported by figures in the nature of caryatides or by animals.

Then we have early Greek and Roman chairs. The earliest Greek chair that we know about goes back about 600 years before Christ. These chairs had backs and stood straight up both in front and back. The Roman chairs wee quite different. They were mostly made of marble and adorned with sphinxes. The curule chair was very similar to today’s folding chairs but eventually ended up with so many ornaments that they are virtually unrecognizable from their folding chair counterparts of modern times. One of the most famous of these chairs was the one at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The wooden portions of this chair are very badly decayed. The chair itself appears to be the work of Byzantine of the 6th century but this is not known for certain.

In our next part in this series we will continue with early medieval and Chinese chairs.

Although many people prefer not to step on them, there is still a large market out there for scales to monitor weight. From the medical scales at the doctor’s office, to the digital scale in your bathroom, there are a wide variety of weight scales available.

Many people prefer to monitor their weight on weight scales at home. The modern scale comes in a variety of styles, sizes and prices. Many brands are good looking, sleek and stylish enough to be matched with the interior styling of your bathroom.

Digital scales have become much more affordable since they first debuted about a decade ago. They now come with additional features. The digital body fat scale by Taylor Precision Products, for example, allows four different users to input height age and gender. The scale then lets off a low-voltage current that calculates that person’s body fat percentage as well.

Bathroom scales give people the freedom and comfort of monitoring their weight without self-consciousness. Another reason why many people choose bathroom weight scales is because the best way to weigh yourself is with minimal or no clothing; and the bathroom provides a private place to do so. Bathroom scales are an ideal way to monitor and manage one’s weight.

Scales are also used outside of the home, however. A wide array of industrial scales can be used to measure manufacturing weights, food weights, and the weight of postal parcels. In addition, a separate line of scales made specifically for babies to weigh not only their bodies, but the amount of food they consume. Then there are pet-specific scales, which are ideal for measuring fidgety animals in the vet’s office. With all the scales in the world, it’s easy to get confused about the various types.

Living in urban areas provides several luxuries: you can work at your dream firm, study at the best colleges and universities of your choice, enjoy the parties are nights, go to modern shopping centers in the block, and more. Urban living might a best but all these have the drawback: space. That is, if you live in a dormitory or a room where every inch is precious. And when you live in an area where putting a generous size of bed is impossible, eating at a coffee table requires to pass through series of maze, and rolling your sleeping bag every morning, it is time to call for help.

Loft bed answers the need for extra space while maintaining a decent place. Loft bed gives you the freedom to move extra furniture in to your place without worrying where to put them. Loft bed makes your room more pleasant at it relaxed the crowd to your room. For children, loft bed can transform the bedroom into a playhouse even if the size is not big.

If you are considering to buy one here are the things your should know:

Loft bed and bunk bed are two different things. Bunk bed is a type of bedding where there are two layers of mattresses. This is used if two people share one room in need for extra space. The most common type bunk bed is the upper deck is horizontal with the lower and the length of the bed depends on your need. There are stack beds with twin size bed on the top and is accessible by ladder and a full size bed at the bottom. Bunk bed also the upper and the lowed bed identical with each other. Bunk bed also has its bottom bunk running vertically and the upper bunk running horizontally.

Loft bed on the other hand presents an elevated bed. This provides an ample space to place other things such as desk, computer, lounge, and table below.

If you live with a roommate, having a bunk bed is more ideal than having a loft bed. But if you live alone, loft bed is best for you.

Loft bed should be though. Consider choosing specific type of loft bed depending on who is going to sleep on it. For teens, loft bed should be sturdy. Since they are much heavier than children, loft bed should provide enough support on their weight.

Loft bed is also designed for children. Considering such would mean looking for loft bed that is designed for children. Colorful loft bed is widely available and ensures the fun the moment bedtime arrives. It also has to have rails. The rails will protect your children in case they move at the edge of the bed. Strength should also be the top priority.

Consider the size of the bed. Make sure that the length of the loft bed will fit your room especially your body. But first, make sure that the bed will fit to your door. Although there are loft beds that can be assembled inside the room, you should always make sure that whatever type of loft bed you choose, you could always get the maximum comfort.

Loft bed should match the room. If you already have existing furniture inside your room, make sure that the loft bed you buy will not destroy the whole arrangement of the room.

One more thing: loft bed can only be used by someone who is old enough to climb up and down the stair and not for children of a very young age.

Bathroom shower curtains offer an affordable way to instantly freshen up a dull looking bathroom. As well as looking nice, shower curtains have the practical function of preventing water spraying out of the tub and soaking the surrounding bathroom fixtures. Installing a curtain is very easy, using rings or hooks to suspend it from a rod. Spring loaded rods can be held in place between two walls without the need for drilling holes in your tiles. This is particularly good if your shower curtain is just a temporary solution until you fit a shower enclosure.

Shower curtains are made from several different sorts of washable fabrics, including cotton, polyester and plastic. Most are water resistant, but if not a waterproofed liner can easily be attached. Some come with weighted hems to help hold them in position. Although not as sturdy as glass shower enclosures, curtains can be very effective with electric showers, though the force of water spray from power showers may be too strong for a fabric curtain to prevent leaks. In that case you may want to look at folding or sliding shower doors to ensure your bathroom cabinets and vanity unit don’t get soaked.

Fitting a shower curtain can instantly change the appearance of your bathroom. Curtains for showers come a huge variety of designs and colors, from polka dots and stripes to plaid, Waverly toile or tropical Hawaiian prints. If you’ve got a specific theme to your decor, you should be able to find a design to fit in. Aquatic, nautical and beach themed curtains are very popular. For kids, colorful prints of dolphins, frogs and rubber ducks are a favorite. You could add a touch of elegance or a splash of fun to your shower times with your choice of curtain.

Bathtub and shower stall curtains are a cheap but effective way to smarten up your bathroom and give it a vibrant new look.

I remember one of the first things I learned about money was don’t count on it. Did you ever notice just when you thought you would actually not only meet all your bills but have a little left over to actually indulge yourself in something good, something happens that removes it before we’ve ever even seen it? The car will break down, the plumbing will leak and the list goes on.

In Feng Shui we designate certain areas of the Bagua to our money concerns and enhancing them will certainly help us hold onto it and even help us bring about prosperity into our lives. However, before we use the bagua to help utilize and create additional wealth, lets take a look at how we handle money.

For example, you’re online at the grocery store and there is a line, the cashier is impatient and you’re packing as fast as you can. Do you ever look at your change or take a minute to put your change away properly? Oftentimes it will just get pushed in our pockets without a thought except to get out of there. In Feng Shui Principles, this is actually disrespectful of your money. Try to step aside for a moment, put your money away properly and you can then also see at a glance about how much you have.

Keep an eye out that you’re only buying necessities. When times are a little difficult financially, try to remember the difference between what you really need and what you would like to have. Buy only the necessities during this time so you can have some left over for another necessity that will surely pop up before your next pay day. Doing without some of the little things for a time will benefit you in the long run and leave you less stressed.

Although you may not know because you don’t want to know, keep account of what you’re charging instead of just checking the statement at the end of the month. Knowing the state of your true financial affairs include those credit cards which can get out of hand without you’re even realizing it. Check on your balances periodically during the month by just calling the number on the back of the card to see your true balance that month of how you are doing financially.

Keep track of not only your “regular” bills but also the ones that come every six months or so, like car insurance. Being somewhat prepared for that extra money during certain months will help you to hopefully be mindful in trying to put away some money toward them so you will not feel strapped because you forgot they were due.

Of course there are many other ways to cut down even slightly on your spending. Remove services you can do without, invest in a lawnmower and do your own maintenance, think hard if you really need that expensive dinner out with friends or if you’d be just as happy to see them afterward for coffee or a drink. The list is long if you really think about it. Now to Bagua your home in every sense of the word. Think of the Bagua as a layout that you can place over anything: an entire home or business including the property, a room or just a desk. You can use the Bagua in a very large space or a very small one.

Certain areas are dedicated to parts of the Bagua. For example, the center always represents health. Stand at the front of your home and the left back area will be your “money” area. This is the area, from an exterior that we want to enhance. If no money is coming in, you might want to use something that “moves” in that area to get your money moving in. Feng Shui colors for this area are Green (The Color of Money) and Purple as an accent color. So you might want to use something as simple as a Green Windsock, keeping your Intention that you would like money to start coming in by signifying movement and color. Intention creates the Energy behind it so be sure to have that in place.

You can do the same inside your house as well. Stand at the Front Door and look to your back left. Here you may want to use a fountain or green, lush plants. Remember to keep your intentions clear.

And at work or your office desk at home if you have one would require something of the same nature. Feng Shui uses a three-legged Frog to help bring in the money and this can be used on something as small as a desk. You can get a money envelope or make one yourself by coloring an envelope RED, infuse it with your intention and put three like coins in them. As always, keep your intentions clear as Feng Shui Principles dictate that our Intentions are 90% of the actual “cure.”

One thing to remember when you are using something moving: when the money does start to come in (and it will), you won’t want it moving right out again. Now is the time to replace a moving object to another area you might like to get moving and put something heavy (be it a rock or a paperweight) to stabilize your finances. You don’t want to keep the money flowing at this point as it will likely flow back out!

Making some simple changes in the way you look at money and the way you treat it and implement some easy changes around your home and business just might turn your finances around! Give it a try and you’ll be surprised what you can create.

Fireplaces and fireplace mantels are fast becoming a core feature in homes across the world as they add a real feature point to any formal or indeed casual living area. Funnily enough fireplaces have had a relatively short history, considering that fire itself has been around for hundreds of thousands of years.

Fireplaces only became common in 1367, when a gentleman while visiting in Rome, was dismayed at the fire pit in his room so he ordered his servants to build a chimney. They did so, adding his coat of arms above the two fireplace mantels. That fireplace is now part of history as ever since it has been the model of almost any room with a fireplace.

Not all fireplaces have mantels, of course. Most do however have either, a single shelf, a marble or tile surround, or a traditional wood carving. Accessories such as mantels, iron tools, guards and screens are an important decorative feature of fireplaces and can often set the tone of a room. And indeed the mantel itself has become a real focal point of rooms as they allow photos, antiques and family heirlooms to take pride of place within the room. Between the style of fireplace mantels, gas grills and wood burning stoves and their surrounds, you either define a room from the start or give it an entirely new look you’ll enjoy for years.

Fireplaces, which can increase the value of your home, are more than ever the focal point of a room. The style of fireplace mantels and its décor, whether stone, marble or finely carved classic moulds sets the tone and character of your home. To enhance your fireplace you may opt to include classical or oriental rugs, antique furniture, and traditional elements. Then again, you might favours abstract paintings, art deco, or even a glass-screen.The choice is really up to you and is about personal choice. It ultimatly depends on how you want to use your fireplace within the room – as a feature or a backdrop.

Fireplaces can be purchased online from any number of internet shopping malls. Consistently browse online stores, looking for the best price, as they often update their prices. Many online stores include thumbnail sketches of rooms with fireplaces installed, so you can see what the installation looks like.

Stress is all around us. Every day we see people rushing from place to place because their schedules are so full there isn’t enough time to get everything done. Work pressures, home and family pressures and unexpected emergencies can happen to all of us. If you’re feeling the same sort of stress, take a step back for a moment. There are simple things you can do to help yourself cope and even become inspired to more easily achieve what you want out of life.

1. Remember to keep a Positive Attitude. I know it’s easier said then done, but do remember that like attracts like. It is less of a struggle in the long run to send out the best personal energy and positive attitude that will help you create what you would like to receive in return. And be confident in the knowledge that you will create the best possible circumstances to help avoid difficulties that you may be expecting. Catch yourself when you are sending up negative thoughts and turn them into the positive!

2. Surround yourself with things you love. Principles of Feng Shui will always tell you to create a lovely atmosphere where you feel comfortable and serene. Your outer space has a direct energy connection to your inner space including your physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Use your favorite colors, happy and uplifting pictures and photos and objects that you truly love to surround yourself with.

3. Find a few minutes to reconnect with Nature. On beautiful days try to spend some time outside to enjoy the beauty and energy of nature. There you are surrounded by living things: plants, trees and flowers all promote beautiful and positive energy that will enrich your inner being. Sunshine promotes a feeling of well being.

4. Set your Intentions and be sure to be clear in them. The Principles of Feng Shui tell us that your Intentions are 90% of the transformations you experience after making the physical changes in your surroundings. Keep that in mind when making any changes in your physical surroundings to help you attain your goals.

5. Remember to be grateful and always give thanks for the blessings in your life. At times we can become so bogged down by some of the negative energy we literally forget to count our blessings. Counting the blessings you already have can help have an impact on bringing in more.

6. Surround yourself with people that nourish your spirit and soul, not the ones that drains your wonderful energy. Some people uplift you in a wonderful sense and make you feel good about yourself while others actually deprive you of your energy because they may be down and negative. Choose the former to spend time with.

7. Get some physical exercise every day. Aside from the obvious health benefits, remember that it helps in releasing stress and other emotional toxins from your body. Yoga, Tai Chi and Qi Qong are especially helpful but if you don’t have time for classes even talking a walk around the block can help replenish your body and spirit.

8. Use Visualization! Just five or ten minutes when you wake up but before you start your day can make a tremendous difference in the outcome of your day. Take that time to just be still and visualize how you would like your day to turn out. Think about what you have to do that day and see in your minds eye that everything will go smoothly with no obstacles which will help create your desired outcome for the day ahead.

9. Consider Meditation. Although it is sometimes hard to fit into a busy schedule, it can help quiet your mind and thoughts from worries and problems and actually will help provide you with insights on the best direction to take and help you find solutions to difficulties when you are less focused on them.

10. Taking a moment each day no matter how busy you are to help another person will be some of the moments of your day that will actually make your day special. There is no joy quite like the good feeling you get when you help another. And the joy of that feeling will return to you long after the day is over. It is something that replenishes our very hearts and souls.

None of the above things should take more then a few minutes out of each day, yet you will be amazed at the wonderful returns that will come into your life in all aspects. Each of them affect your body and spirit, just the combination you need to create wonderful transformations and changes you may otherwise would not have experienced!

Decorating your home can be a fun adventure, but it does take time and effort to achieve the perfect look. When decorating you get to reflect your own personality within the home - whether it be through the paintings, the cushions, the linen or the bedding or even the window treatments like blinds and curtains. Window treatments along with blinds, curtains and shutters are perhaps one of the most important aspects of a room. This is because windows are the main source of light in a room and therefore the main focal point of a wall which attracts a lot of attention. Decorating with window treatments such as blinds will give each room in your house a very individual look.

You can find window treatments like blinds from many professional furnishings companies by shopping online. Online furnishings companies who specialize in window treatment products provide many beneficial features for home decorators who want to embark on some ‘do it yourself’ activities such as helpful information, discount window treatment such as blinds and curtains, and window coverings made in any fabric to complement your existing or planned decor. These sites offer a wide selection of window shades, vertical blinds, bamboo blinds and other options. In fact window treatments can even be fully customized to suit your specific room according to fabric density and window size.

Purchasing window treatments such as blinds online can potentially save you hundreds of dollars. Many online retailers offer discounted options by providing you with high quality fabrics for blinds and curtains at the low prices usually found in online furnishing stores. This is good news for customers considering that window treatments such as exterior shutters, curtain rods and vertical blinds for your home, can be very expensive, particularly if you combine this with other home decorating costs. Online shopping allows you to save dollars from every possible aspect of decorating.

Purchasing window treatments online also has many other benefits that you can take advantage of. By researching products and then purchasing them online you can gain easy access to the most popular products (those purchased most often), obtain quality images of sample colors, and receive discount prices. Some online stores also offer free insurance, free delivery and free installation. Shopping online also allows you to view fabrics and products from some of the top manufacturers in the window treatments industry but with products at well below retail prices.
