Most people love candles, and have many in their homes. This is great! Candles are wonderful for so many things, waht isn’t so great is the kind of candles most people are using.

Most people, when buying scented candles just go to the nearest store and pick up some random cheap candle. This can be hazardous to you and your family’s health!

Candles you pick up at just any old store are most likely made with paraffin, a petroleum based product, and depending on where the candles were originally made, they co uld also be made with a lead wick. The making of lead wicks has been outlawed in the United States, but apparently the sale of them has not.

A much better, healthier alternative to these scented candles would be soy Candles!

There are many benefits to using soy candles:

•Soy candles burn approximately 50% longer

•they burn slower and at a lower temperature, which helps the fragrance distribute better

•Soy candles are nearly completely soot free

•They are non-toxic and made with no pesticides or herbicides which makes them safe for use around kids and pets

•Soy candles are made from soybeans grown in the USA which is a renewable re source and means that your purchase helps our economy!

•Soy candles are less likely to cause allergies

•They are biodegradable and clean up with soap and water.

After reviewing the many pros and cons of the different types of candles, it is easy to see why more and more people aer switching to Soy candles over Paraffin based acndles.

Now it’s your turn to decide…

There is a defined beauty that comes with handcrafted, or custom made furniture. If you have ever seen an antique dresser and appreciated the time and dedication it took to create such a marvelous piece of furniture you would also appreciate the craftsmanship of modern day artisans as well.

Woodworking is an honorable art form. The men and women who practice this art and create durable, functional, and practical furniture are among a dying breed. The quality furniture that is produced by these talented wood workers is among the most beautifully creative, fashionably timeless and strongest ever.

If you think it is difficult to find a master carpenter who practices his craft by specializing in creating custom furniture, think again. Every town should have an abundance of custom furniture makers. Phone books and word of mouth are among the usual means a reliable woodworker will be found. A very established cabinet or furniture maker will not have to advertise.

The cost for custom furniture will be significantly more than you would pay for the more basic furniture found in a retail setting. The reason behind the price increase for custom furniture may seem obvious to some. To clarify the cost to those who just don’t understand it begins with the very reason basic furniture is less expensive.

Custom furniture is one of a kind. There is no production line where countless tables are spun out on a daily basis. Custom furniture is unique and also crafted with care and with an attention to detail. The tools and space needed for a successful woodworking shop is part of the expenses that are passed on to customers. Learning the trade and being an apprentice for years only to then acquire years of on the job experience is what custom furniture is all about.

If you think you can’t afford to purchase custom furniture you might be right. If you are looking to accentuate your entire home in custom furniture it can become quite costly. The thing about custom furniture it has a great resale value. What you pay for it today, though seemingly pricey, will likely be the least ever paid for a particular piece of furniture.

When it comes to furniture, you have several different types. There is basic, custom handcrafted, and thrift shop types to name a few. The basic type of furniture is found in any retail store and can be an affordable and fashionable way to create just the right atmosphere in any room.

Furniture can be a utilitarian device in your home or it can define your personality. In some cases it can do both. Certainly you have been in the home of a friend or relative and wondered what the heck they were thinking when they decided to put that couch and that table together. Furniture is a personal aspect of the home, and discovering ones personality in their furniture choice and decoration attempts may be frightening at best.

There are times though when financial limitations cause a slight change in what you want in furniture and what you can actually afford. Going into debt over furniture is never a wise decision. Using your imagination and utilizing that which you can afford in an imaginative way is not only fun but also it allows a whole new meaning for your personality to pour through the grand design of your home.

Lets face it we can’t all be interior design specialists, nor do we all wish to be. There is nothing wrong with wanting your living space and the furniture in it to reflect a refined element. Decorating your home in the style of say, Early American Flea Market is not really a refined definition of style. However if you possess the innate quality to lean toward eclectic and have the great luck of making that work for you… Early American Flea Market is not such a bad “style” after all.

Some people have a talent for accurate furniture choice and decorating specific rooms or areas. But mostly the coming together of a room works simply because they are not afraid to let their true colors show. Basic furniture has its place in our society and in the “true colors” part of decorating a home. There should never be any qualms about utilizing all the styles and colors of basic furniture available. And you should always let your spirit flow.

Dear Friends,

Light is an essential part of our daily activities. Just like we need air, water and food to survive we need light in order to function efficiently.

Gone are the days when people used to stop working after sunset. The invention of electricity has made life easier and has helped to improve efficiency.

The use of light in interior spaces greatly affects the environment and "mood" inside the space. Here are some of the aspects that can be considered while lighting an interior space.

1) Natural light:

The Sun is the biggest source of light available on our planet. We all are dependant on it. Sunlight is not only required to function but is also responsible for biological balance of the Earth. Sunlight also keeps the air clean by killing any possible bacterial attacks which might be harmful to health.

It is normally assumed that sunlight can penetrate inside a space for about 7 feet (approximately 20 meters). If the architect has taken proper care during planning of the structure, then sunlight can be a very good and free source of ight.

2) Artificial filler lights:

These types of lights work on electricity and are required mostly at the night times. But this is not always true. There are some geographical locations where the weather is cloudy for most months in a year.

At such times filler lights in the form of fluorescent tube lights. These types of light are used to create the same effect that the sunlight would create. As the name suggests. these types of lights "fill" the space evenly with light, eliminating any dark spaces.

3) Special lighting for special spaces:

Special lighting is required at spaces where it is necessary to create a "mood" or special "ambience" inside a space. To achieve this use of color is done. Lighting fixtures like spot lights are used which divert the attention of the crowd at certain focused areas.

These kind of techniques are also used in commercial showrooms, to enhance the importance of the display areas. If you have visited car shows, exhibition pavilions, you will see this kind of lighting extensively used.

Special type of lighting requires more number of light fixtures, because the area they cover is very limited.

4) Extreme lighting:

This type of lighting is used in spaces where the activities have a special purpose, such as movie studios, pubs, dance floors, etc.. Here the lighting used can be of movable types, or can have more sophisticated controls such as intensity, color, movement, controlled through music beats.

The above discussion shows, how the activities happening inside a space directly affect the type of lighting used inside a space. A properly planned lighting plan can greatly enhance the quality of a space.

I hope this article was useful.

So you’re in the mood to decorate your bedroom, but you’re on a limited budget…

AND you don’t have a headboard. And we all know that the bed is the major focal point of a bedroom. Your bed needs weight and drama… a headboard!

But if you don’t want to spend $1000 on a headboard, what do you do?

Well here are 6 very budget friendly ways to adding a headboard to your bed.

1. Place box cushions along the wall at the head of your bed. These are thick enough to hold there shape while adding a cushioned backdrop to your bed. Now you can lay in bed and read a book comfortably. You can make your box cushions out of foam and fabric or find some discount cushions to match your decor. Even old couch cushions covered in new fabric can work!

2. Hang a full-length mirror horizontally above your bed. This will give the feel of a headboard, reflect light in the room and help open up your space. You’ll be surprised at how great this looks!

3. Hang fabric down your wall. Quickly sew up some rod pocket curtains, or find some pre-made curtains and hang them from the ceiling down and behind your bed. This will add height, texture and drama to your bed. You can hang your fabric with a standard curtain rod or staple it to 1" x 2" board.

4. Hang framed art across the wall above your bed. Find images that complement your room’s color scheme and frame them in a rich wood tone or paint the frames to add a punch of color. Evenly space them on the wall above the head of your bed.

5. Make your headboard! This is easier than you think. Get some plywood at the height and width that you need. Glue a layer of foam to the board. Then cover the foam and board with batting, stapling it to the back of the board. And the cover the batting with your fabric, stapling it to the back of the board. Easy!

6. Hang shutters behind your bed. What a terrific country look, to reuse some old shutters or fencing and use it as a headboard!

With a little imagination you can come up with your own special headboard creation that will add much needed drama to your bedroom plus adding in your personality. Because what’s a bedroom without your personality shining through?

Happy Decorating!

You walk into the store and find the perfect rug. It’s the exact rug you were looking for. It’s the color, the exact size, the exact shape you have been dreaming of. It will fit perfectly in the middle of your living room. It will go great with the furniture. You bring the rug home and put it in the place you have for it. Everything is fine until a few days later when you realize that it slips, it moves, it will never stay in place, and it’s always in the way.

How could such a perfect rug have gone bad?

Well actually there is nothing wrong with the rug. It is still the perfect rug, but it is missing a rug essential, the rug pad. Most people don’t think about buying a rug pad when they buy a rug. They just put their rug in its place not realizing that they need this overlooked accessory.

What does a rug pad do anyways? Is it worth the expense?

One of the best things that a rug pad does is that it keeps the rug on floor. There are times when a rug tends to ‘creep’ along the ground as people walk over it. A rug pad will keep the rug from moving around. This also helps the rug not wear out as quickly. When a rug does not move around, it won’t wrinkle up and wear out extending the life of the rug.

A rug pad can also add some thickness to the rug. Some rugs are very thin, especially Oriental and Persian rugs. Rug pad can be made up to around a half inch thick not only giving the rug support but also a nice cushion. This helps especially while vacuuming. You will no longer have to worry about sucking the rug up into the vacuum.

What do you look for in a rug pad?

The first thing to consider is the size of the pad. The rug pad needs to be about as big as the rug itself. If it is too small, part of the rug will not be help down properly while a larger pad would look ridiculous on your floor. A second consideration is the thickness of the pad. If the rug is already rather thick, you might want to get a thin pad. Lastly, if the rug is going to be on a hard or slick floor, make sure that you find a non-slip pad. This not only adds to your comfort but also to your safety.

Next time you find yourself putting your ‘perfect’ rug back in its place, it might be time to go shopping for a rug pad.
